What is Puri Ratha yatra?

The Puri Ratha Yatra is a Hindu festival associated with the worship of Lord Jagannath. Celebrated for centuries in the Indian holy city of Puri. As part of the festival custom, the three deities of Lord Jagannath, his brother, and sister. The three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are newly constructed each year for the Ratha yatra festival.

After that Gajapati Maharaja the king of Puri, who is also known as the first servitor of the Lords, does Chera Pahara the holy cleaning of the chariots. Finally, the devotees pull the chariots up to the Gundicha Temple which is also known as the birthplace of the Lords.

The Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra festival is also known by the names of Puri Rath Yatra, Gundicha Yatra, Jagannath Puri Ratha Yatra.

The deities stay at Gundicha temple for nine days after which they ride the chariots back to their Jagannath Temple. On the way back the chariots halt at the Mausi Maa Temple which is the home of Lord Jagannath’s aunt' here the deities are offered Poda Pitha a special pancake considered to be the Lord’s favorite of all the festivals of the year the greatest is the Puri Rath Yatra or Car Festival, which commemorates the journey of Krishna from Gokul to Mathura. How to Celebrate Puri Ratha Yatra?

Rath Yatra is also a known car chariot festival all over the world. when devotees who are not allowed into the temple can get a chance to see the deity. This festival is a symbol of equality. The three gods Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra are worshipped within the temple of Sri Mandira Rath Yatra is organized in Puri. It is believed that every year Lord Jagannath wishes to visit his birthplace  Mathura for a few days.

During Chhera Pahara, the deities are brought from the temple by the King and are placed on the chariot. Jagannath temple is accessible only by Hindus but on the day of the Rath Yatra, people of all faiths can visit the temple. These idols are placed in decorative chariots and are accompanied by chants and conchs, which can be heard all around.

  1. Snana Yatra is the one where the Deities take bath and then fell sick for almost 2 weeks. They are thus treated with ayurvedic medicines and a set of traditional practices
  2. Sri Gundicha the Deities are taken in the onward car festival from the main shrine to the Gundicha Temple.
  3. Bahuda Yatra the return car festival, the Lords are brought back to the main Temple.
  4. Suna Besha is the event when the Deities wear golden ornaments and give darshan from chariots to the devotees.
  5. Adhara Pana is an important event during Ratha Yatra. On this day a sweet drink is offered to the invisible spirits and souls, who would have visited the celestial event of the Lords as believed by the Hindu tradition.
  6. At last, the Deities are taken back inside the main shrine the Jagannath Temple and installed on the Ratna Simhasana on the last day of the Ratha Yatra activity which is called as Niladri Bije.

History of Puri Ratha Yatra:-

Puri Rath Yatra is one of the most historically and religiously significant festivities that are held in the Indian. The ostentatious procession's last destination is the Gundicha Temple, where the wishes of Kanha are fulfilled. It is one of the grandest and oldest festivals celebrated in India every year.

According to popular Bhagavata Purana-Lord Jagannath is said to have expressed his desire to visit his birthplace 'Gundicha Ghat' Some Hindus believe that Jagannatha is an incarnation of Vishnu.

There are '3' chariots of Puri Ratha Yatra Sree Jagannath Balabhadra and Subhadra

  1. Lord Jagannatha's chariot is called Nandighosa, which is 45.6 feet height and18 wheels are decked with a cover made of red and yellow cloth.
  2. The chariot of Lord Balarama called the Taladhwaja, which is 45 feet height and 16 wheels are covered with red and green cloth. Its height is forty-four feet. 
  3. The chariot of Subhadra known as Dwarpadalana, literally "trampler of pride," is forty-three feet high with twelve wheels, each of seven-foot diameter. This chariot is decked with a covering of red and black cloth.

When is the Puri Rath Yatra festival celebrated?

Jagannath Rath Yatra festival as per the traditional Oriya calendar begins on the second day of Shukla Paksha of the Hindu lunar month of Ashadha.

Why is Puri Rath Yatra Celebrated?

Rath Yatra is organized in Puri. It is believed that every year God Jagannath come to visit his birthplace Mathura for a few days. To fulfill this desire this Yatra is conducted each year from the Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple.

As per Hindu tradition, the Lord gets lovesick once a year during the month of Ashadha. To make the Lord happy the devotees take Him, His elder brother, and younger sister out of the Jagannath Temple on a lavish procession in a chariot to get together with His devotees in Gundicha Temple which is located two miles away to the North. The deities stay there for complete seven days followed by a visit to their aunt’s home 'Mausi Maa Temple' on their return journey back to Jagannath Sri Mandira Temple.

Five hundred years ago. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu the incarnation of Lord Krishna, requested His devotees to observe Ratha Yatra with great delight and enthusiasm. On this day Lord Chaitanya used to go down on his knees and scrub the Gundicha sanctuary where God Jagannath would stay.

Srila Prabhupada, an Indian spiritual teacher and the originator of the Hare Krishna movement was deeply attached to the Ratha Yatra festival. As a youngster, he started observing Ratha yatra when he was five years of age utilizing a little homemade cart and pulling it around the area with his friends. Years later, from nineteen sixty-seven until his passing, Srila Prabhupada joined a large number of Hindus in urban areas around the globe and they started celebrating the Ratha Yatra Chariot Festival in the streets of London, Tokyo, Sydney, and Los Angeles.

What Happens on the Puri Rath Yatra Festival?

Rath Jatra festival is celebrated on the second day in the bright fortnight of Ashadha month usually in the month of June and July.  The annual festival is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, with its main celebrations held at Puri in the Indian state of Odisha.

The Jagannath triad 'Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra’ stay in their main Jagannath Temple, where they are worshiped every day by hundreds of devotees. But once during the month of Asadha, the triads are brought out of the temple on the Bada Danda Each of the three idols is placed on huge colorfully decorated chariots and drawn by thousands of devotees to the Gundicha Temple.

This chariot journey continues down the 3Km long Bada Danda avenue of Puri. The Jagannath deities first spend a short time at their aunt’s abode in Mausi Maa Temple which is situated at the midway of Bada Danda on puri and reaches the main destination. the Gundicha Temple before nightfall. The deities remain inside the chariot on the first day and enter the Gundicha temple on the morning of the second day. The deities then reside at the Gundicha Temple for the next seven days complete.

After the 7day stay at Gundicha Temple, the divine trinity leaves the temple and journeys back to their main temple in Jagannath, traveling in their chariots. On the way back, the deities stop again for a short time at their aunt’s abode 'Mausi Maa Temple' and continue their journey back.

The idols reach Jagannath Temple in the evening and wait outside. On the next day  'he 9th and last day of the festival'  the idols are adorned with new clothes and are placed again into the temple, marking an end to the Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra Festival.

Chandan Yatra:-

The construction of the chariots starts on Akshaya Tritiya the third day of the bright fortnight of Vaisakha with ritual fire worship. This takes place in front of the palace of the King of Puri and opposite the main office of the Puri temple. On this day, the new agricultural season starts, and farmers start plowing their fields. In Puri Ratha Yatra festival the representative images of the presiding deities are taken out in colorful processions and given a ceremonial boat ride in the 'Narendra pokhari'  every day

This sandalwood festival culminates in the 'Snana Yatra' the Bathing Festival on the full moon day of the month of Jestha. this day the presiding deities descend from their seats on an elevated platform in the sanctum sanctorum, the jeweled throne. They are bathed in one hundred eight pots of water brought from the suna Kua. The golden well and assume the elephant form on the special bathing platform close to the Eastern boundary wall of the temple. Only three special patta chitras traditional Odia paintings of natural colors on cloth stiffened with starch known as Anusara Pattis are strung on a bamboo screen hiding the deities from public view can be seen by the public.

Bahuda Yatra:-

After spending seven days in the Gundicha Temple the Lord returns to His Sri Mandira in the same Ratha. This is known as Bahuda Yatra. On the way back God Jagannath stops at the Mausima temple to meet His aunt. A special offering is made for the Lord with rice or coconut and lentils mixed with jaggery. After that, the Lord arrives at Singha dwara. Lord Lakshmi sees God from a pavilion and she comes out in a palanquin to meet God receives His garland and then goes back to the temple to wait for Him. The next day is Ekadashi and the Lord is offered a special drink which is known as Adhara Pana. On that evening, all the three Deities are adorned in Sunar vesha and lakhs of pilgrims throng around the Ratha to get a glimpse of the Sunar Vesha Darshana of the Lord. The next day the Lord goes back to the Sri Mandira on His temple in (Niladri).

They wanted to take Krishna back to Sri Mandira. They pulled the chariot of Jagannath Balarama and Subhadra and walked towards Sri Mandira. Ratha Yatra symbolizes this mood of devotees and the Gundicha temple symbolizes Vrindavana. Thousands of devotees pull the grand chariots accompanied by the sound of cymbals. Musicians and dancers perform for the pleasure of the Lord in front of the chariots.
